No Refunds, starring Katy Murphy (who we were actually lucky enough to chat to on our YouTube channel, which you can watch here), is a larger-than-life, fully immersive game show where one very brave person competes to win the price of their ticket back as a prize! Hosted by the ever-fabulous and larger-than-life Tiffany Gold, the show takes the special VIP through a series of vulnerable games to explore the lengths to which performers go to make a living! During the opening moments of the show, the audience are introduced to the immensely iconic Southern belle Tiffany Gold, who takes to the stage in a full-length, gorgeous red-sequin gown with perfectly styled blonde hair akin to the legendary Dolly Parton (who will forever rest in power). She is fully aware of how much of a star she is, and now is the time for her to give something back to the audience in the shape of a partial to full refund for one special guest. The entire premise of this unique theatrical experience sees a special guest from the audience compete in a series of games that essentially see them metaphorically bare all in front of the live crowd in an attempt to earn the price of their ticket back.
Once the evening’s mystery participant has been introduced to the audience, they are encouraged to spin a wheel to randomly decide which games they will be taking part in. Rather unusually, the wheel decided that the sole responsibility of picking the games landed on stage manager Alex, who selected a series of unique games that saw our guest explore many of the behind-the-scenes theatre goings-on that often aren’t discussed, never mind put on stage! During the first challenge, the remaining audience members were instructed to write down the type of roles they thought the unexpected star of the show would take in the world of theatre. This was an obvious nod to the idea of typecasting, which is something many performers experience in their day-to-day lives. Once the responses were all collected in, the VIP of the evening had to stand emotionless as Alex read out ten of the typecast roles from the audience. These ranged from wholesome and joyous to pure chaos, as the guest clearly had friends in the audience who made it their whole mission to ensure they broke on stage. I could not imagine standing in front of strangers as they shared their first impressions of what sort of roles I would suit (never mind having personal friends in the front row), and while the VIP did break at one point, they dealt with this with the grace and decorum radiated by Tiffany. The second activity of our show saw the team discussing how performers are often forced to multitask while simultaneously trying to present themselves in a certain way to impress not just potential audiences but also potential investors who may or may not be in the crowd. The team produced an easel for the guest to paint the rather abstract idea of a family bowling night, as the rest of the audience shouted a collection of outlandish additions to the artwork (such as the Shining Twins, famous American football players or even a throuple), while those contributors had to judge how well the guest had managed to integrate these crazy ideas. While all this was happening, the newly crowned artist had to narrate every single stroke on the page, which was not only hilarious but also provided a spotlight on the mind of a creative. The final game of the evening took a much more emotional turn, as the VIP was encouraged to share one of their darkest traumas with the audience. They shared a powerful story about family illness and losing loved ones, which had everyone in the audience very close to tears. It was a clear testament to Katy and her team that the unexpected guest felt comfortable enough to share such a dark and intense story with a group of people they had never met before. I guess it shows how looked after and comfortable the VIP felt, as they decided at the end of the show that they did not want their refund. This was a powerful gesture in its own right, but also a testament to how compassionate the team behind No Refunds were towards those brave enough to get on stage!
In conclusion, No Refunds, featuring the iconic Tiffany Gold, is a truly unique theatrical experience/game show that is underpinned by some of the darker sides of being involved with the theatre industry and the demands society places on performers. Tiffany herself truly is a highlight of this production, with her larger-than-life yet endearing persona, only for Katy to strip away the theatrics of the alter ego in the closing moments. This again establishes that she is, in fact, a product of Hollywood, and the performer behind the character is also in the same boat as other people battling against the industry and its demands! I would rate this show 4 out of 5 stars!
