Bottom’s Dream by The Artist Collective (who we were lucky enough to chat to on our YouTube channel, which you can watch at https://youtu.be/heKbntdqqts) is a truly immersive and larger-than-life retelling of one of Shakespeare’s most iconic characters, Nick Bottom, from A Midsummer Night’s Dream! This feel-good musical is jam-packed with over-the-top characters, wonderful musical moments and even some mesmerising aerial skills, showing how and why these stories continue to be shared hundreds of years after the death of the Bard!
Those who know me in the real world will be aware that, in my day-to-day life, I am actually a qualified English teacher, and it is basically a prerequisite of the job that I take any opportunity to celebrate William Shakespeare. One of the biggest criticisms of the Bard, especially from young people, is that Shakespeare’s plays can be incredibly complex and difficult to follow. However, The Artist Collective have discovered a way to break down one of the most iconic plays and make it easy to understand, even for people who have never read the original text. In this reimagining of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the team have decided to remove the convoluted love story and eventual weddings to focus purely on the ‘Rude Mechanicals’ and, in particular, the chaotic and unpredictable journey of Nick Bottom. For those who are unfamiliar with this iconic source material, the story follows Bottom after he becomes involved in the early stages of a theatre troupe, before he is transformed into a donkey and gains the attention of Titania, the Fairy Queen. However, even if you are unfamiliar with the original play, the team behind Bottom’s Dream have clearly made a conscious effort to make the show as easy to follow as possible, not only by cutting the additional romances but also by regularly talking directly to the audience.
In fact, there are multiple moments throughout the show where guests are invited to sing and dance along, as well as being brought onto the stage in the closing moments. This means that they are not only fully involved in the show but also creates a connection between the performers and audience that helps everyone understand everything that is happening. From the very moment the crowd enter Jade Studio at Greenside, they are instantly transported into the story, as the characters welcome everyone and guide them to their seats before transitioning into an energetic number to start the show. This is accompanied by a brilliant collection of musicians who showcase a selection of almost bluegrass-inspired original songs that capture the whimsical and magical essence of the story. The music provides a wonderful backdrop to the action while also helping establish the unique atmosphere of this reimagining.As well as music and fantastic aerial skills, the team have injected the perfect amount of modern references into the show to help the audience truly understand everything that happens in this unique story. One of my favourite moments happens in the opening stages, as Puck is selected to become a part of this new theatre group through a Goblet of Fire-style process, with John Williams’ ‘Hedwig’s Theme’ being played by the wonderful on-stage musicians. This was such a fun inclusion, as it immediately establishes that while the production is based on a Shakespearean classic, the team are not afraid to inject modern cultural references that audiences of all ages can recognise. It is these little additions that help make the production feel accessible without taking away from the essence of the original story. The aerial elements were also particularly impressive, adding another layer of spectacle to an already energetic production. The performers are not only required to deliver their lines and musical numbers but also demonstrate an impressive range of physical skills throughout the show. This creates an experience that constantly gives the audience something new to watch and ensures that the energy never drops.
In conclusion, Bottom’s Dream by The Artist Collective is a magically immersive production that directly transports the audience into the heart of this iconic story. The production strips back some of the chaos of the original source material, allowing the audience to truly focus on the wonderful and eccentric Bottom. The brilliant bluegrass-inspired music, endless energy and audience participation make this not only an enjoyable experience for everyone in attendance but also a show that would be perfect for an outdoor Shakespeare-focused festival, especially for those looking for a fresh perspective on the Bard’s classics.I do have to say that there were a few mixing and microphone issues throughout the show that did make it somewhat difficult to fully understand what was happening at certain points. However, the entire cast worked incredibly hard to physically communicate what was happening if anything was missed, ensuring that the story remained accessible despite these technical difficulties. Ultimately, Bottom’s Dream proves that Shakespeare does not have to be intimidating or inaccessible. By focusing on one of the most entertaining characters from A Midsummer Night’s Dream and combining him with live music, physical theatre, aerial performance and plenty of audience participation, The Artist Collective have created a wonderfully eccentric production that celebrates the Bard while giving the audience a completely fresh way to experience his work.I would rate this show 4 out of 5 stars!
