Slideshow – Production Review

Opening the entire show was the wonderful Steve Silverman (who we recently chatted to on our YouTube channel, which you can watch at https://youtu.be/p92TKl_11Lc), who started the event with a hilarious story about a childhood romance. This story documented how, in his younger years, Steve had a crush on a female classmate who began a different romance with a fellow student while he was away for a few days. This caused Steve to scramble and end up in a relationship with someone he was not truly interested in. The story built as his newfound partner shared the stresses and anxieties of her life and, in particular, her hatred of her new stepmother. Steve, after receiving some less-than-helpful advice from a friend, used this information to bring about the end of the relationship, which ultimately became the first step on his journey to finding his husband in later years. To accompany this equal parts heartfelt and hilarious story, Steve compiled a series of photographs, including an actual copy of his school yearbook. At the end of the event, Steve decided to share an incredibly moving story about the loss of his dogs, which had the host in tears and the audience only moments away from joining him. The dog lovers in the audience (myself included) were instantly drawn in by the collection of adorable photographs of his pets at various ages and were left deeply emotional as Steve discussed the immense love he had for them before they passed away.

The first guest performer to take to the stage was the fantastic Dara McGary, who shared the story of meeting her husband and the series of unfortunate (yet hilarious) events that led to the pair eventually finding each other. The story began with a brilliant setup in which she spoke about her love of men who like to dress up, have lots of friends, and hold secure and dependable jobs, only to reveal that her very first crush was none other than Ronald McDonald of McDonald’s fame. In my own childhood, I vividly remember an encounter with the clown mascot of one of the biggest fast-food chains in the world, and I recall thinking, even at that young age, how strange and unusual the character truly was. However, I have a sneaking suspicion that the version I met was not the same one Dara had a crush on. This unique story then transitioned into tales of two unsuccessful marriages, a plethora of fancy-dress outfits (including an iconic lettuce costume), and a mind-blowing coincidence involving a photograph taken during lockdown that eventually led to her meeting her now-husband. The incredible return of the lettuce costume as part of a Caesar salad couples outfit demonstrated that Dara had clearly and thoughtfully considered the photographs and stories she would share during Slideshow. There were numerous recurring references throughout her set, which helped the audience follow along with ease while also keeping them in hysterics from beginning to the end.

The next performer to guide the audience through a love-struck story was the amazing John Ford, who spent his entire slot discussing his love and obsession with not only the James Bond franchise but also the characters themselves. What made this performance particularly unique was the fact that John delivered the entire retelling without notes or cue cards (apart from the photographs displayed on screen). This allowed him to focus entirely on his physical performance and inject even more passion into the story, which the audience were instantly captivated by. Not only was this confession highly relatable (let’s be honest), but it also contained multiple fascinating pieces of trivia about the iconic series, particularly the range of London locations used throughout the films. I have to admit that this was not something I was especially aware of before John’s set. As a result, I left feeling not only highly entertained but also having learned a thing or two about the beloved movie franchise, which, if you have been following my blog for a while, you will know is something I always appreciate.

The third and final special guest of the evening was the fantastic Tess Raffety, who flawlessly introduced her set with a story about wanting to become one half of a crime-fighting couple. What I thought was particularly clever about Tess’s storytelling was the fact that she not only referenced the “Love Struck” theme of the evening but also found a thoughtful way to weave that concept directly into her performance. She opened her portion of the evening by acknowledging the theme of the night and how it often conjures images of instantaneous and overwhelming love from the moment two people first lay eyes on one another. In reality, however, love is something that requires constant effort and dedication. One of the highlights of the evening came when Tess proudly announced that she had worked on award-winning productions and now found herself performing to a small gathering of people above a pub. This had the audience in fits of laughter, only for the talented performer to transform the joke into a powerful message about love and romance. After all, you can never truly complete love; it is something that always requires effort and care to maintain.

Overall, this all-American, love-struck edition of Slideshow saw the entire cast share a plethora of hilarious stories that explored the full breadth of the different forms of love one experiences throughout a lifetime. The simple slideshow-style setup allowed the audience to easily follow along with each story while also giving the performers the freedom to embrace a more energetic and engaging style of presentation. As a format, Slideshow combines all the fun of stand-up comedy with the warmth and comfort of catching up with loved ones. I would rate this show 4 out of 5 stars.
