La Voix: Red Ambition- Production Review

Just over two years ago , we attended our first ever La Voix show (which you can read about at https://rhysreviews.com/2022/02/20/la-voix-performance-review/ which took place in the Sherman Theatre Cardiff. At this performance, La Voix and her team went above and beyond to ensure that my Aunty’s birthday was one we will never forget as she was dubbed the ninth wonder of the world! This is why we were incredibly excited when it was announced that the iconic redhead would be returning to Cardiff but this time she would bring her red Ambition tour to the New Theatre! This bigger venue allowed La Voix and her team to really step up the production value of this show such as having a full band on stage, incredibly choreographed lighting routines (with the one right at the beginning of the show being particularly incredible), flamethrowers and confetti cannons. It would be very easy for a performer to hide behind all of these theatrics but La Voix can make sure that the focus stays entirely with incredible renditions of some of the most iconic, camp songs to ever exist! When La Voix is not showcasing her incredible vocal talents in this show she is hilariously interacting with the audience. In classic La Voix style, there are moments where she picks out certain members of the audience to chat with and even gets one of them on stage to open the second act! It is clear that every single detail of the show has been carefully throughout with La Voix referencing things she said early in the production. For example earlier on the show La Voix how Dianna Ross looks so lost on the stage during that performance at Coachella, especially during their rendition of “Upside Down” and then the opening of act two begins with La Voix delivering a live impression during a Dianna Ross medley. Without having to audibly bring attention to the fact that she is referencing a comment earlier in the show, every single audience member was able to understand and recall what was said earlier showing just how thought-out this production truly is! Having a script that is so reliant on the audience remembering every utterance on stage is highly impressive in its own right but the added layer of unpredictability by including the audience in some of these sections shows how much of a talented, professional La Voix is as she is able to steer conversations into exactly where she needs them in order for the rest of the show to make sense.

The Red Ambition tour opened with a wonderfully high-energy performance of “I’m So Excited” by the Scissor sisters which instantly injected immense amounts of energy and excitement into the audience. Using such an iconic song to open your show ensures that from the very first moment, La Voix is able to grab the audience’s attention and get them excited for whatever else the night may bring. One of my favourite favourites of the evening saw the incredible La Voix bust out an Abba Medley. Having recently attended a Mamma Mia brunch (which you can read about at https://rhysreviews.com/2023/09/24/mama-mia-brunch-experience-review/) we are clearly big fans of ABBA so this camp medley would have been fantastic on its own but La Voix decided to add an extra layer of impressiveness to this performance as she showcased four incredible impersonations. This sequence began with one of the greatest impressive of Cher I have ever seen as the band accompanied the performance with a Cher-infused version of an ABBA classic. The performer then effortlessly switched to a wonderful impression of Liza Minelli for a high-energy version of another ABBA song. Not only did La Voix sound like the musical theatre icon but she was able to physically capture her mannerisms and physicality which made for a highly entertaining and impressive performance. This routine ended with impersonations of Julie Garland and Shirley Bassey which were both brilliant and had the audience howling with laughter throughout.

At one point on the show, La Voix walked over to her gorgeous disco ball-shaped bar and launched into a hilarious sequence where she impersonated a physic. Complete with vague feeding questions such as “Has anyone here thought about, is trying to and has lost weight?” Or “doe anyone here have or had a pet dog?” This satirical parody allowed La Voix to flex her comedic talents as the band prepared for the next musical sequence. She also used this disco ball bar to tell the story of a sexual encounter gone wrong with a carefully choreographed series of songs played by the bar’s built-in Alexa. Yet again, La Voix was able to perfectly time her responses to fit with the programmed device which made for a highly cohesive and hilarious routine! Around the time I saw La Voix in Cardiff last year, she published a very emotional video talking about how the van containing all the production equipment for the show had been stolen. This is a terrible thing to happen to anyone but especially when you are about to start touring. Every item was returned and La Voix was able to complete her tour so this time around she decided to dedicate a song to the mysterious criminals who tried to dim her sparkle last year. My favourite performance of the entire night would have to be La Voix’s rendition of Don’t Rain on My Parade from Funny Girl the musical. Every single moment of this song was absolutely spectacular with the incredible vocals making this one of the greatest renditions of this song I have ever heard (and I have heard this song a lot!) This number stripped back all the theatrics I discussed earlier forcing the focus to solely be on La Voix’s insane musicality where they truly shone like the star they truly are. This was absolutely show-stopping and deserved its own standing ovation! In typical La Voix fashion, the closing moments of the show was marked with a wonderful rendition of “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler which had every single person on their feet singing and dancing along.

Overall, La Voix’s Red Ambition show at The New Theatre Cardiff is a fully-fledged, musical spectacular that showcases the performer’s effortless charisma, incredible vocal talents and comedic prowess in a camp musical adventure. Every single detail of the show has been carefully constructed to create multiple through lines which keep the audience entertained and excited throughout. I would rate this show 5 out of 5 stars!
